U.S., South Korea, and Japan hold Trilateral Meeting to Address North Korean Involvement in Cryptocurrency Thefts.

U.S., South Korean, and Japanese national security officials convened in Seoul to address North Korea’s cryptocurrency thefts, nuclear pursuits, and ballistic missile programs. Discussions included trilateral initiatives, such as crisis consultation commitments and collaboration on countering North Korea’s use of cryptocurrency for illicit activities. The White House disclosed the meeting’s focus on DPRK’s connections with Russia, while ongoing efforts to combat cyber theft, including sanctions on hacking entities like Lazarus Group, were emphasized. Recent actions by the U.S. Treasury Department targeted crypto addresses and mixers linked to North Korean hackers, reinforcing measures against money laundering supporting weapons programs. Notably, Tornado Cash, a privacy tool, faced sanctions for allegedly facilitating over $100 million in stolen crypto transactions.
