Senator Elizabeth Warren, representing Massachusetts, could soon face a potential political opponent who is supportive of cryptocurrency.
According to The Boston Globe, John Deaton is contemplating running for the Massachusetts Republican Party’s nomination for the US Senate. Warren, seeking her third term in office after winning her seat in 2012, is up for re-election this November.
Jim Conroy, a political operative for Massachusetts Republicans, indicated that Deaton is seriously considering a run.
Deaton is known as the founder and host of CryptoLaw, a platform providing information, news, and analysis on significant legal and regulatory developments for digital asset holders.
In various blog posts, Deaton has criticized the US government’s approach to crypto regulation, particularly targeting the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) under Chairman Gary Gensler. He previously submitted an amicus brief on behalf of retail holders of XRP in the SEC’s lawsuit against Ripple. After a court decision last year largely favoring Ripple, Deaton wrote in a Bloomberg Law op-ed that the SEC had “forgotten its primary mission to protect investors.”
In other news, Warren’s office reportedly commemorated the 15th anniversary of Bitcoin’s launch and its pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, through the Capitol Flag Program. This program enables legislative offices to request that flags be flown in honor of special events and organizations.
According to the program’s official website, individuals can request flag raises through their representatives. Warren’s website indicates that flag requests may experience delays due to reduced operating capacity in the US Capitol Flag Operations Office.
Bitcoin Magazine, suggesting that Warren had embraced Bitcoin, published a certificate with Warren’s signature. However, it’s uncertain whether Warren personally or a staffer in her office authorized the flag raise request.
Warren’s office did not provide a comment in response to inquiries.
